Estonia has officially commissioned its first-ever factory for the production of explosives for ammunition.

The Nitrotol plant was opened on January 13 in the Ämari defense industrial park, according to the Estonian Ministry of Defense.

The plant is a key element in Estonia’s transition from importing ammunition to producing critical components domestically.

Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur announced that the launch of the plant transforms the country into a full-fledged ammunition manufacturer.

According to him, the concentration of production capacities and technologies within the country will allow for faster arms buildup in the event of a crisis.

He also stressed that the development of the defense industry will have a direct economic effect through jobs and exports.

Nitrotol explosives will be used to equip artillery ammunition and other types of weapons.

The company plans to open additional production facilities in the new defense industrial park in Ermiste in 2027.
