Germany will join NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission by sending four Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced this in Brussels, according to Der Spiegel.
According to sources in the Bundeswehr, the aircraft could be transferred to the Arctic by the end of this week to begin surveillance flights.
The German fighter jets will be based in Iceland. The primary mission of the air group will be air combat and patrol.
In the coming weeks, the German presence in the region may expand significantly. In particular, the possibility of using maritime reconnaissance aircraft to monitor the water area is being considered. The German Air Force may also provide refueling aircraft to ensure long-range flights.
In addition, the Bundeswehr may use A400M transport aircraft to provide logistical support to other countries participating in the mission. This will help partners who lack their own transport for long-distance cargo transfers.
The Arctic Sentry mission is part of efforts to strengthen deterrence and defense amid Russia’s increased military activity and China’s heightened interest in the Far North.
