Germany will finance a $500 million package of U.S.-provided military equipment and ammunition for Ukraine.
This support is part of the Prague Ukraine Resource Pledge (PURL) initiative.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the German government’s announcement, describing it as a powerful demonstration of Germany’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine’s defense.
“This delivery will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression. Germany is the largest European donor of military aid to Ukraine, and today’s announcement once again underscores its commitment to helping the Ukrainian people protect their freedom and sovereignty,” he emphasized.
The German Foreign Ministry explained that the support packages under PURL would include military equipment that was either not produced by the European industry or could be delivered by the United States faster than by European partners or Canada.
This specifically involves critically important air defense systems needed to counter Russian air strikes, which are causing an increasing number of civilian casualties across Ukraine.
Germany’s announcement came shortly after Sweden, Norway, and Denmark jointly decided earlier in August to provide around $500 million to NATO’s initiative to supply American weapons to Ukraine.
Earlier, the Netherlands announced a similar funding package.
On July 14, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he planned to provide Ukraine with weapons worth ‘billions of dollars,’ which NATO would purchase.
Among the military equipment planned for delivery, he mentioned Patriot air defense systems.
During the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting on July 21, Ukraine’s Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that Ukraine’s most critical need was the purchase of air defense systems and their ammunition.
