The German Armed Forces have ordered 1500 new Wolf 2 off-road vehicles.
This was reported on the official Bundeswehr website.
The agreement also provides for a possible increase in the order to 5800 units.
It is noted that the German military will receive the first vehicle equipped with the new D-LBO digital radio and command equipment as standard.
The new SUV is based on the commercially available Mercedes-Benz G-Class of the latest military series 464. Like its predecessor, the basic structure is a ladder frame with a hinged body.
“This allows us to achieve a permissible total weight of 4.5 tons, which allows us to transport four equipped soldiers, including small arms, ammunition, luggage and provisions,” explains Peter K, project manager of the Wolf 2.
The vehicle can carry a total payload of 1.2 tons. The difference from the civilian G-Class is that the Wolf 2 is a vehicle designed exclusively for military use and can only be purchased by government agencies.
The SUV has an automatic transmission. It is equipped with a Euro 3 engine with a capacity of almost 250 horsepower. In addition, the crew can ignore the engine’s protective measures to provide full power for a certain period of time in critical situations.
“In general, such exceptions are necessary to perform military tasks and maintain mobility even in critical situations,” says the project manager.
Wolf 2 will be available in two configurations: a military police vehicle and a command vehicle for the rest of the military. The police version differs only in a special alarm system and integrated blue lights on the front and rear.
The contract between the manufacturer and Bundeswehr was signed in July 2024. Five pre-production Wolf 2 vehicles were handed over for testing in November of the same year. It is expected that the military will receive key test results and confirmation of performance by October 2025.
The first production vehicles are scheduled to be delivered in November this year. In the future, it is planned to deliver up to 30 SUVs per week, but without the D-LBO digital equipment. It will then be installed by the Bundeswehr’s own personnel and put into operation by individual companies. This process needs to be fine-tuned and will therefore take some time, so that by April 2026 at the latest, the new, digitized Wolf 2 SUVs will be regularly issued to the troops. After the last Wolf 2 is delivered to the German army, the vehicle will remain in service for at least 20 years.
