Since the beginning of the full-scale war against Ukraine, Russia has lost more than 100,000 of its soldiers killed or wounded. Such figures were mentioned by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, with reference to Pentagon data.
The VOA reported about this citing Reuters information.
This is the highest estimate of losses from the U.S. official since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Milley noted that Russia has high manpower losses.
“You’re looking at well over 100,000 Russian soldiers killed and wounded. Same thing probably on the Ukrainian side. A lot of human suffering,” the general said.
Russia on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of its troops from the right bank of the Dnipro River near Kherson in southern Ukraine, which may be due to high casualties in the Kherson region. Such a decision can deal a serious political blow to Moscow and become a turning point in the war.
Milley talked about the initial indicators that suggest Russia has completed its troop pullout from Kherson. But he cautioned that this withdrawal could take time to complete. According to his estimate, Russia probably has 20,000 to 30,000 troops north of the Dnipro river in that area.
“It won’t take them a day or two, this is going to take them days and perhaps even weeks to pull those forces south of that river,” Milley said.
In battles, Russia loses not only people, but also equipment. Colin Kahl, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy reports that Russia has likely lost half of its main battle tanks in the war against Ukraine and has used up most of its precision weapons. According to the U.S. politician, this is a major strategic failure of the Kremlin.
“Putin has failed… Russia will come out of this war weaker than it was,” Kahl told reporters.
He emphasized that the Russian Federation has suffered tens of thousands of casualties since the beginning of the war in February, which is significantly more than the losses of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.
“They’ve probably lost half of their main battle tanks in the entire Russian army… More than 80% of their ground forces are bogged down in Ukraine. They have used up most of their precision munitions, and the sanctions and export controls will make it very complicated for them to rebuild their military to pre-war levels,” Kahl said.
U.S. officials say that Moscow has been unable to achieve its objectives in Ukraine. They are wondering how long Russia will be able to sustain an invasion that has also decimated much of its mechanized ground forces and sapped its artillery stockpiles.
According to the latest data from the General Staff, Russia has lost more than 2,800 of its tanks since the start of the full-scale war.
