Su-25 attack aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force have been adapted for the use of French AASM HAMMER high-precision bombs.
This was said by Serhii Holubtsov, Chief of Aviation of the Ukrainian Air Force in an interview “Donbas.Realities.”
This aircraft armament, which Ukraine receives within the framework of military assistance from France, is actively used for strikes on occupiers.
“Our Su-25 aircrafts are also being upgraded, and now they can already use bombs that have a solid rocket motor. They are called HAMMER, we use them, and very successfully,” said Serhii Holubtsov.
According to him, at the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion, Ukraine had stocks of unguided aviation weapons for Su-25 attack aircraft. However, in the first year of active hostilities, these reserves were exhausted.
To continue the operations of assault aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Forces, in particular, the United States transferred Zuni rockets to Ukraine, which were available in depots.
These unguided air-to-ground missiles are designed to engage ground targets, fortifications, other facilities and columns of enemy armor.
However, these reserves are over, and the resumption of production is impractical due to the transition of Western aviation to precision weapons.
Therefore, in order to leave the Su-25 in service, the Ukrainian military adapted them for use, the French AASM HAMMER aircraft bombs.
Ukrainian MiG-29 fighters were also adapted for the use of such French bombs.
In addition, HAMMER bombs will also be integrated into future Ukrainian F-16 multi-role fighters.
The AASM is a kit for unguided bombs that turns them into precision bombs. The kit consists of a front part with a guidance system and flaps and a rear one with a rocket motor designed to increase the range of the ammunition.
