France to Replace Part of Spaceport Security with Drones

The French space agency (CNES) is set to boost security at its main spaceport in Kourou with advanced drones that can operate collaboratively.

The aim is to replace part of the traditional security force with modern technology and ensure more reliable monitoring of the site, according to Opex News.

This initiative is part of a €104 million, five-year plan to upgrade the spaceport. The program aims not only to digitize all operations but also to make rocket launches more environmentally friendly by using ‘green’ energy.

Under the plan, drones will patrol the perimeter, inspect structures, and monitor equipment transport. Their most critical task will be overseeing the site during rocket launch preparations.

Currently, air security over the spaceport is provided by military helicopters and fighter jets. The drones are intended to support them. The first tests of these drone teams are scheduled for late 2026.

The boost in security is linked to the very tight launch schedule of the new Ariane 6 rocket. For example, at the end of April, a large batch of satellites for Amazon is scheduled to be launched, as the company tries to catch up with Elon Musk’s Starlink system.

In addition to drones, the spaceport is set to receive other upgrades worth €140 million. These include a modern radar, a solar power plant, and renovated clean rooms where satellites are prepared for flight.
