Four U.S. Army soldiers have gone missing along with engineering equipment in Lithuania during exercises near the border with Belarus.
The U.S. Army Command in Europe and Africa, along with the local newspaper Delfi, reported the incident.
A joint search operation is underway, involving U.S. Army personnel, Lithuanian Armed Forces, law enforcement officers, and border guards.
The soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, were participating in planned tactical exercises near Pabrade, about 10 kilometers from the Lithuanian-Belarusian border.
The disappearance of the American servicemen was reported on Tuesday, March 25, at 16:45.
“I would like to personally thank the Lithuanian Armed Forces and first responders who quickly came to our aid in our search operations,” Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, the V Corps commanding general, reported. “It’s this kind of teamwork and support that exemplifies the importance of our partnership and our humanity regardless of what flags we wear on our shoulders.”
Delfi sources indicate that the soldiers have been found dead, although this has not been officially confirmed.
An M88 armored recovery vehicle was also reported missing along with the soldiers.
It was recently reported that the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense is considering mining its border with Russia and Belarus as part of a broader effort to strengthen its defenses.
This measure would be aimed at providing longer-term deterrence against potential threats, with both anti-personnel and anti-tank mines to be used.
The plan is based on Poland’s example along its northeastern border.
In addition, Lithuania is discussing joint efforts to fortify the border line stretching from Finland to Poland, including significant infrastructure such as fortifications, bunkers, and bases.
