The European Parliament called on EU countries to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons to strike military targets in Russia.

The European Parliament’s press service announced this.

The resolution, adopted on September 19, states that without lifting the current restrictions, Ukraine cannot fully exercise its right to self-defense and remains vulnerable to attacks on its population and infrastructure.

This resolution was supported by 425 votes, 131 voted against, and 63 MEPs abstained.

The document underlines that insufficient ammunition deliveries and restrictions on ammunition use risk offsetting the impact of efforts made to date and deplores the declining volume of bilateral military aid to Ukraine by EU countries.

MEPs reiterate their call for member states to fulfill their March 2023 commitment to deliver one million rounds of ammunition to Ukraine and to accelerate the delivery of weapons, air defense systems, and ammunition, including TAURUS missiles.

They also restate their position that all EU countries and NATO allies should collectively and individually commit to annual military support for Ukraine militarily of no less than 0.25% of their GDP.

Ukraine is seeking to use cruise and ballistic missiles from its Western partners to target Russian military airbases and military facilities used to attack Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

However, several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, are currently facing political restrictions on the use of long-range weapons they have transferred to Russia.

Assistance from the EU

In August, participants in the EU Defense Ministerial Council meeting agreed to increase the number of Ukrainian military personnel to be trained in the EU.

EU aims to make the training mission as “pragmatic” as possible and to simplify access to it for Ukrainian military servicemen as much as possible.

In particular, the training center in northern Germany will train 20,000 Ukrainian defenders by the end of 2024.
