Due to security risks, the European Union is considering banning entry to Russian citizens who participated in the war against Ukraine.
This proposal was put forward by Estonia, according to DW.
According to Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, many member states support such measures.
She believes that the European Union must have answers to this question before the end of hostilities in Ukraine.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that, according to his information, many Russian soldiers want to come to Europe after the war ends.
“There are about a million combatants in Russia. They are mostly criminals. They are very dangerous people. I am sure, and we have information, that most of them will come to Europe after the war. And Europe is not ready for this,” the minister said.
Former war participants, some of whom have criminal pasts, may carry out tasks for Russian special services once they enter the EU.
It is known that Russia continues to seek to destabilize European countries through acts of violence and sabotage.
Former members of the Russian occupation army may also become part of the criminal world.
In this regard, Estonia demands that all EU and Schengen Agreement countries impose a complete ban on entry for all Russian citizens who participated in the war against Ukraine.
The ban should also apply to the refusal to issue visas and residence permits to such Russians.
This requires a change in visa rules, which can only be initiated by the European Commission in agreement with the EU Council.
