In the city of Volgograd, Russia, an electrical substation exploded during an attack by Ukrainian drones.
A video showing the explosion was shared by the Supernova+ Telegram channel.
It is still unclear which specific substation was affected, and whether the explosion was caused by the drones or if it was simply an accident, as such incidents frequently occur in Russia during the winter months.
The energy system of Volgograd is based on the operation of high-voltage facilities, among which the key role is played by substations with a voltage class of 500 kV.

The Yuzhnaya substation is one of the most important hubs in the region, as it is part of the energy bridge connecting the Balakovo and Rostov nuclear power plants through Volgograd. Alongside it operates the Volga substation, which plays a critical role in transmitting power from the Volga Hydroelectric Station to the general power grid, ensuring supply stability.
For the direct distribution of electricity within the city and powering industry, the capacities of 220 kV substations are used.
In particular, the Sadovaya substation, located in the Voroshilov district on Kryvorizka Street, serves as an important distribution center for the city’s networks.Meanwhile, the northern part of the city, including the aluminum plant and other large industrial facilities, receives power through the Aluminum substation, which ensures the uninterrupted operation of the industrial sector.
