Drones Spotted Over Patriot Air Defense System Base in Germany

Unidentified drones have been spotted over a German airbase where Patriot air defense systems of the German Air Force are deployed.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on this.

A series of suspicious incidents involving drones were recorded at the air base, located on the North Sea coast.

It is noted that from January 9 to January 29, six cases of drones of unknown origin had been recorded near the base in Schwesing, near Husum.

The base is used as a training center for the Patriot anti-aircraft missile system. In particular, Ukrainian military personnel are trained there to master the operation of these systems.

According to the publication, an investigation is currently underway on suspicion of espionage.

This is not the first time that unidentified drones have been detected over military installations in Germany. According to the police, it is impossible to control most drone flights, which ultimately makes it difficult to identify and find the violators.

In addition, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser recently said that the government should’ve allowed the military to shoot down suspicious drones spotted near military installations or other critical infrastructure.

This refers to the amendments to the aviation security law introduced by the federal government on January 15. The final decision will be made by the members of the Bundestag.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser have called for increased protection of the country’s key facilities. There is speculation that the drones appearing in the German sky may be launched by foreign countries for the purpose of espionage or sabotage.

Nancy Faeser emphasized that the use of drones had increased significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
