The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) has placed an order for new coastal surveillance radars with domestic defense contractor Terma A/S.
The announcement was made on the agency’s official website.
The new radar systems will gradually replace existing surveillance infrastructure, with installations using the current network to ensure uninterrupted operation during the transition.
Deployment is scheduled for 2025–2026, allowing for a phased modernization. The order also includes two radars to be installed in Greenland.
The upgrade will also include enhancements to radar data collection, incorporating artificial intelligence for automated target identification.
The use of AI is expected to reduce operator workload by supporting round-the-clock maritime monitoring in key Danish straits, including the Great Belt, the Øresund, and the Fehmarn Belt.
“Replacing the current maritime surveillance radars provides a more effective and optimized solution. The new systems will be fully integrated into a broader network supported by artificial intelligence, delivering relevant, processed information to better support maritime operations,” Colonel Klaus Qvist, Head of the Air Division at DALO, said.
Militarnyi recently reported that Denmark is also considering restoring coastal missile defense units, with plans to equip them with systems based on the NSM (Naval Strike Missile).
