Denmark is imposing a temporary ban on all civilian drone flights.
The Ministry of Defence of Denmark announced that the restriction would remain in effect until Friday, October 3rd. The measure was adopted in connection with the upcoming European Union summit being held in the country.
The ministry emphasized that the decision was prompted by drone-related incidents at several airports. Authorities believe the ban will help prevent potential threats during the visit of European leaders to Denmark.
“We cannot allow unauthorized drones to create dangers or disruptions in society, as has happened recently. Next week, Denmark will host the EU summit, so security is a top priority. The ban will help eliminate the risk of confusion between hostile and legitimate drones,” said Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen.
The Air Navigation Act grants the Transport Minister the authority to restrict or close airspace when public safety or special circumstances require it. Violating the ban may result in fines or imprisonment for up to two years.
The restrictions do not apply to military drones, government and police drones, as well as devices used in medical and rescue operations.
Recently, unknown drones were also detected near the Germany-Denmark border, in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein.
