With the help of a RGT-27 thermobaric grenade, the Ukrainian military has destroyed the Russian BMP-2.

The news was published by analysts of the Tysk information portal.

A Mavic 3 drone operator from the 59th Motorized Brigade destroyed an abandoned Russian infantry fighting vehicle using a RGT-27S2 thermobaric grenade. Their use has not been reported before.

The fall of a cylindrical grenade and the subsequent powerful fuel air explosion can be clearly seen in the video from the UAV camera.

The ammunition is designed in two form factors: RGT-27S with a rectangular hull, and RGT-27S2 with a cylindrical hull. They are designed to defeat enemy manpower in shelters of various types and in open areas, as well as to disable vehicles and lightly armored equipment.

They were first presented to the public during the showcase of new weapons at the training ground in the Chernihiv region in 2017, and already in 2020 the RGT-27S and S2 were adopted for service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Nevertheless, there was no information about the serial production of these ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The principle of thermobaric ammunition is based on the effect of a bulk explosion of an aerosol cloud of flammable substance. Due to the large size of the cloud, the energy of the shock wave can hit the enemy at a greater distance.

The explosion occurs in two stages: first, a small charge is detonated, spraying a cloud of flammable substance, which is followed by a delayed detonation of a second charge, causing a detonation of the cloud of aerosol.

At the time of explosion, a RGT-27 grenade of no more than 600 grams in weight creates a fire cloud of 13 m3 for four seconds, which reaches a temperature of 2,500-3,000 ° C. This allows not only to destroy manpower, but also to disable lightly armored equipment.

Militarnyi has earlier reported that in addition to thermobaric grenades, the Ukrainian military is actively using thermobaric ammunition for Soviet RPG-7 grenade launchers.

In the published video, the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are shooting thermobaric grenades RTB-7MA at buildings occupied by the enemy on the outskirts of Bakhmut.
