The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine released a video showing a staged operation that simulated the elimination of Russian Volunteer Corps commander Denis WhiteRex Kapustin using an FPV drone.
The details of the operation were disclosed by the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine’s press service on social media.
The multi-stage special operation was carried out to protect the commander’s life and to expose an enemy agent network.
To support the cover story, a video recording was created showing the operation of two strike drones: the first FPV drone flew into the minibus carrying Kapustin, while the second filmed the ‘aftermath of the strike’ – a burning vehicle.
The footage shows the first drone attacking the vehicle as a man is getting inside. The camera of the second drone then captures the minibus already engulfed in flames.
According to intelligence officials, the masterminds of the crime within the Russian special services believed the video that was provided.
The Russians also paid half a million dollars for the completed ‘job.’ The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine noted that these funds will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of their special forces.
On January 1, the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, reported that the killing of Kapustin had been staged on the orders of Russian special services.
News of the Russian Volunteer Corps commander’s supposed ‘death’ emerged on December 27, 2025, on the Zaporizhzhia sector while he was reportedly carrying out a combat mission.
As a reminder, the Russian Volunteer Corps was created in 2022 from Russians who wanted to fight on the side of Ukraine. In November of the same year, the ‘Civil Council,’ consisting of public figures from nine Russian regions, announced the start of the selection of volunteers for national units within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including the Russian Volunteer Corps.
Selection for the unit is carried out, in particular, among captured Russian soldiers, as well as ethnic Russian emigrants living in Ukraine or other countries who voluntarily come to Ukraine with the goal of joining the Russian Volunteer Corps.
Since its creation, the soldiers of the Russian Volunteer Corps have taken part in combat operations on the most active fronts, including conducting raids into border areas of Russia itself in 2023 and 2024, together with the Freedom of Russia Legion.
