A wave of reactions is unfolding on social media to Donald Trump’s statements about the alleged unwillingness of NATO countries to help the United States in war.

The reason for this was a quote from Trump that began to spread on X and other platforms.

“We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform a day after the White House said it would not rule out military intervention to acquire Greenland.

In his post, Trump also repeated his frequent claim that many North Atlantic Treaty Organization members had failed to meet their military spending commitments until he intervened.

In response, users from various NATO countries have been posting photos of coffins covered with national flags, depicting their military personnel who have died in American wars.

One of the first such posts was by Polish journalist David Kamizela with a photo of Polish soldiers killed in Afghanistan, published in X.

A similar reaction was demonstrated by Danish politician Rasmus Jarlov, who wrote that he did not know how to explain this statement to the parents of Danish soldiers whose sons did not return from Afghanistan.

Users from the UK, France, and other countries have also posted similar images using the same Trump quote as a caption.

The French account French Aid to Ukraine in an appeal to the White House asked a rhetorical question: has the United States ever thanked its allies?

The posts emphasize that NATO countries participated in US-led combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, suffering real combat losses.

According to official data, more than 1,100 soldiers from allied countries were killed in the war in Afghanistan, not including US losses.

Users also note that the only time Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty was invoked was after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in favor of the United States.

Thus, the chain reaction on social media has turned into a public reminder of the real cost of US allied support in the wars of recent decades.

As a reminder, the United States recently announced that it will no longer be a cornerstone of NATO’s defense after 2027.
