United States President Donald Trump and European allies have been discussing security guarantees for Ukraine that Putin has allegedly agreed to.
An unnamed European official told CNN that European officials and the US president had discussed the possibility of providing Ukraine with “Article 5-style security guarantees” as part of a potential peace deal in a conversation after Trump’s talks with the Kremlin leader in Alaska.
However, the source said, there was no talk of NATO’s involvement in these potential guarantees. Specific details of the proposal are unknown.
A source of European Pravda informed about the negotiations and confirmed that such a proposal under discussion had clarified that during the telephone conversations it had been expressed in the formulation “non-NATO Article 5 security guarantees.”
“This idea was proposed by the American side during the talks as one of the security guarantees for Ukraine, allegedly agreed upon in Alaska with Putin,” the source added.
Donald Trump also told the Europeans that Putin wanted a ‘peace agreement’ immediately, not a ceasefire.
It is also known that on Monday, Volodymyr Zelensky is flying to Washington for talks with Trump.
In Alaska, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin also agreed to reach an ‘air ceasefire’ over Ukraine in preparation for a new round of negotiations.
Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (NATO) is the key principle of collective defense on which the entire Alliance is based.
The article states that an attack on one or more NATO members is considered an attack on all. In this case, each member state undertakes to assist the state that has been aggressed, including the use of armed forces if necessary.
However, Article 5 does not automatically oblige the use of military force. It is up to each state to decide how to help, from military participation to political or material support. But the very fact that this provision exists significantly restrains potential aggressors.
Throughout NATO’s history, Article 5 has been officially activated only once – after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Then the allies supported Washington in the fight against terrorists and took part in missions in Afghanistan.
