China is conducting simulated satellite battles as part of preparations for potential space warfare, CNN reported, citing the U.S. Space Force.
According to U.S. Space Force officials, American tracking systems recently detected five space objects executing synchronized and controlled maneuvers of unknown purpose.
“That’s what we call dogfighting in space. They are practicing tactics, techniques, and procedures to do on-orbit space operations from one satellite to another,” Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, Vice Chief of Space Operations, shared.
Later reports from U.S. military officials indicated these maneuvers involved a series of movements by Chinese satellites in low Earth orbit in 2024.
The activity included three experimental Shiyan-24C satellites and two Shijian-6 05A/B space objects.
While the exact purpose of the maneuvers remains unclear, U.S. Space Command officials suggest they may be part of China’s broader efforts to develop space-based military capabilities amid the increasingly active development of space interceptor programs in various countries.
“This is the most complex and challenging strategic environment that we have seen in a long time, if not ever,” Guetlein pointed out.
He also noted China’s significant progress in space exploration, particularly in lunar research and deep-space development, which could have both civilian and military applications.
Militarnyi previously reported that China announced plans to upgrade its BeiDou satellite navigation system with next-generation satellites.
The announcement was made during a symposium marking the 30th anniversary of the BeiDou system’s development.
