Canada has announced a major new military aid package for Ukraine, marking the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The announcement was published on the official Government of Canada website.

Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty announced that Operation UNIFIER will be extended for an additional three years, through 2029.

As part of this mission, the Canadian Armed Forces provide ongoing military training and support the development of the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Under the updated mandate, the number of personnel assigned to the operation will be increased.

This is intended to provide greater flexibility for the mission and allow Canada to respond more effectively to Ukraine’s evolving operational needs.

In addition, Ottawa will transfer more than 400 armored vehicles to Ukraine, including 66 LAV 6 armored personnel carriers and 383 Roshel Senator armored vehicles.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand also announced an additional allocation of 20 million Canadian dollars to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.

These funds will be used to procure and supply energy equipment to Ukrainian companies on a competitive basis – in line with current needs – to repair and restore critical infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes.

In addition, Canada is imposing sanctions on 21 individuals and 53 entities, as well as 100 vessels belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, in accordance with the Special Economic Measures Regulations. The price cap on Russian crude oil has also been lowered – from $47.60 to $44.10 per barrel.

The new restrictions are intended to increase economic pressure on Russia, reduce its energy revenues, and limit its financial capabilities, including in the area of cryptocurrency use.

On February 6, it was reported that Ukraine would receive aviation missiles from Canada to strengthen its air defense and counter Russian cruise missiles.
