New damage to the submarine cable between Finland and Germany has been discovered in the Baltic Sea.
Yle reported on this.
The alleged breakage of the telecommunications cable occurred in Sweden’s exclusive economic zone off the coast of Gotland.
The Swedish Coast Guard confirmed the incident to the publication. They stated that it was not known when the alleged cable break had occurred, but the agency had been aware of the incident since the last day.
On Friday morning, the Swedish Coast Guard sent its ship to the scene.
Also, the Prime Minister of Sweden said on social network X that he was aware of that. He says that information about possible damage is taken very seriously.
The media also received confirmation from the Swedish Armed Forces about the cable incident.
Officially, it is not yet clear which cable had been damaged and when. However, Yle notes that it is probably the C-lion1 submarine cable. It is the only cable that connects Finland and Germany and is laid in that area of the Baltic Sea.
The Swedish Prosecutor’s Office has launched a preliminary investigation, with the assistance of the Coast Guard, into the damage to the submarine cable.
The cable is 1173 km long and runs from the Gulf of Helsinki to Rostock in Germany. Launched in 2016, the cable is the only submarine communication cable running from Finland to Central Europe.
This is the second damage to the C-lion1 telecommunication cable in the Baltic Sea in recent years. The first damage was reported on November 18, 2024, after the Chinese cargo ship Yi Peng 3 passed over it.
The Chinese vessel was detained by a ship of the Royal Danish Navy to interrogate the crew and to get a detailed look at their course and actions in the area of telecommunication cables.
