In Germany, politicians have reached an agreement in principle after several weeks of debate over a new law on military service.
According to the draft law, military service will initially remain voluntary.
However, the coalition partners agreed that in the future all men will undergo a mandatory medical examination, DIE ZEIT reports.
This was a key demand of Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
The factions effectively agreed on the main provisions of the law on military service back in October.
At that time, they defined the principles in case they failed to attract a sufficient number of volunteers for the planned increase in the size of the Bundeswehr.
Among other things, it was planned to hold a lottery.
However, the Minister of Defense insists on a comprehensive medical commission for all men, during which the decision will be made based on qualifications and motivation.
The new army strength is to be reached by 2035. According to the draft, the additional need for new soldiers and women should be clearly defined.
The planned corridor until 2035 is focused on NATO commitments. If these targets are not met, conscription will be resumed.
According to the plans, the Bundeswehr should increase by about 80,000, reaching 260,000 people in permanent service.
In addition, there are 200,000 reservists, whose numbers are expected to increase under the new law on military service. The law is expected to enter into force in early 2026.
