Bundeswehr has been unable to begin operating the IRIS-T SLM air defense system, purchased in September 2024, due to non-compliance with German safety standards, Defense Network reported.
Although the system was declared to have reached initial operational capability last September, it remains in the testing phase.
One of the system’s components, the crane installed on the transport and loading vehicle, failed to meet safety requirements.
According to the publication, the crane — proven under combat conditions — must now be dismantled and replaced with a certified alternative that has not yet been tested in real-world operations.
Overall, authorization for the system’s operational deployment is not expected before the end of 2025.
The report also noted that the system’s developer, Diehl Defence, has upgraded the IRIS-T SLM and SLS systems based on Ukrainian battlefield experience.
Specifically, the radar integrated into the SLM system can now provide external target designation for the SLS system.
Germany has ordered 17 IRIS-T air defense systems for Ukraine, while procuring five systems for its own use under the European “Sky Shield” initiative.
According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Ukraine has already seven IRIS-T systems, which have helped intercept more than 250 Russian missiles, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
