Germany has offered to ship Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks and Marder 1A5 infantry fighting vehicles to Brazil, after Ukraine reportedly declined to accept the equipment due to its technical condition.
According to the publication Tecnodefesa, the German government officially proposed transferring about 65 Leopard 2A6 tanks and 78 Marder 1A5 vehicles from Bundeswehr stockpiles.
This offer is part of Brazil’s initiative to modernize its armored forces under the “Nova Família de Blindados sobre Lagartas” program, which aims to develop a new family of tracked combat vehicles for the country’s army.
The Leopard 2A6 is expected to be a candidate to replace the outdated Leopard 1 tanks, which have been in service with the Brazilian army since the 1990s. If the offer is accepted, the vehicles will undergo refurbishment and maintenance in Germany by KNDS Deutschland before being delivered to Brazil.
It is also noted that the proposal is currently at the intergovernmental initiative stage, with no contract signed. The Brazilian Ministry of Defense will need to conduct a technical and financial assessment, including logistical costs and the need to train crews.
If the deal is approved, it would represent the largest modernization of Brazil’s armored fleet in decades.
Militarnyi previously reported that Austria is developing a plan for a major rearmament of its army, which includes the acquisition of a Leopard 2A8 tank battalion.
