The Brazilian Navy has acquired two Albion-type amphibious assault ships from the UK.
This was reported by the official website of the Brazilian Navy.
The agreement was signed during the LAAD Defence & Security 2025 defense exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, which was attended by the representatives of the UK Ministry of Defence.
The agreement on the purchase of two amphibious assault ships was concluded when both sides celebrated the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United Kingdom.
As noted by the Brazilian Navy, the purchase of two amphibious assault ships will qualitatively strengthen the maritime component, and will allow the country to have more means for both military operations and civilian use.
“This class of ships is distinguished by its ability to conduct humanitarian operations, respond to emergencies and public disasters, as well as support Civil Defense and fulfill its classic role of projecting power,” the Brazilian Navy said in a statement.
The signed document between the parties is an agreement of intent, and the cost of purchasing these ships has not yet been announced.
As for the amphibious assault ships themselves, both HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark have been withdrawn from the fleet. They were decommissioned due to understaffing and technical problems.
Currently, both ships are in reserve, but, according to the plan, in the absence of buyers, they can be scrapped.
Information about Brazil’s possible purchase of the amphibious assault ships appeared even before they were decommissioned. At that time, according to unofficial sources, it was known that the Brazilian Navy had been considering the purchase of HMS Bulwark. However, at that time, the ship had been undergoing extensive repairs for more than three years, which was expected to affect the deal.
At the same time, the condition of HMS Albion was much worse, which is why its sale was not considered. Nevertheless, according to the official agreement, the ship has been listed and will be sold.
This is not the first time Brazil has purchased decommissioned ships from the UK. For example, in December 2017, the Brazilian government officially confirmed its intention to purchase the British helicopter carrier HMS Ocean.
The final purchase price then amounted to £84.3 million (approximately 312 million Brazilian reais), which was announced in a statement by the Brazilian Navy on Christmas Eve 2017.
On June 29, 2018, the ship was officially commissioned by the Brazilian Navy under the new name PHM Atlântico (A140).
