The German government plans to provide an additional €400 million to strengthen Ukraine with military equipment.
According to Der Tagesspiegel, this plan is stated in a letter from the German Ministry of Finance to the Bundestag Budget Committee.
Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Finance Florian Toncar noted that the funds should be used, in particular, for “the purchase of military equipment from the arms industry.”
According to him, the successes of the Russian armed forces have worsened Ukraine’s situation.
Ukrainian troops have suffered “heavy material losses” due to Russia’s growing superiority in artillery and the use of guided bombs.
“Ukraine will fail in its defense campaign without significantly increased material support,” stated Florian Toncar.
The money is planned to be spent on the purchase of military equipment and machinery for the Ukrainian army, including air defense equipment, drones, and protective gear.
According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, about €1.42 billion is still needed to support Ukraine by the end of the year.
This amount exceeds the country’s budget by €397 million, which is why approval from the Bundestag is required.
Previously, the German government has also allocated up to €50 million for the treatment of wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
On September 19, the German government also provided Ukraine with an additional military aid package.
The package, in particular, included 22 Leopard 1A5 tanks and three Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns.
