The State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus (KGB) claims that a foreign citizen, who was allegedly preparing a terrorist attack, was killed in the city of Grodno in the west of the country.
The state agency BelTA reported about this with reference to the KGB.
As stated in the statement, KGB officers carried out “special measures to stop the activities of persons who entered the territory of the Republic of Belarus for the purpose of a terrorist action.”
The foreigner, who is called L. in the statement, “with the use of automatic weapons and by detonating combat grenades” committed armed resistance and was killed.
According to the KGB, civilians and employees of law enforcement agencies were not injured.
The State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus does not provide information about the citizen of which country and what action he intended to carry out in Belarus.
It is also unclear whether he acted alone: the message mentions “individuals who entered the territory” of the country in the plural.
As the Belarusian service of RFE/RL notes, earlier several Telegram channels, referring to residents of Grodno, reported shootings or explosions on Kurchatov Street.
One of the eyewitnesses claimed that the policemen “threw a person into the car,” it was not specified whether she was alive or dead.
The authorities of Belarus have repeatedly accused Ukraine and Western countries of preparing provocations, Kyiv and the West denied such plans.
At the beginning of March, Alexander Lukashenko announced that Belarus had detained a “terrorist of the Ukrainian special services” and his “helpers” involved in an attempted sabotage at the Machulishchy air base near Minsk.
In total, according to him, more than 20 people were detained. Lukashenko placed responsibility for the preparation of sabotage on the Security Service of Ukraine and the Central Intelligence Agency.
