Ukraine is developing a new system to counter the Russian Shahed kamikaze drones, which are launched in large numbers every night.

The media outlet Frontliner reported on this.

The concept involves using a balloon as a platform for FPV interceptor drones.

The latest system, designed to intercept enemy drones, is being developed by the company Aerobavovna in collaboration with its partners.

A thermal imaging camera, which is also mounted on the balloon, is used for the timely detection of enemy drones.

In the event of a threat detection, the interceptor drone is released from its mount on the balloon, after which the operator guides it to the target. The specifications of the system and the interceptor drones themselves have not been disclosed.

For over a year, various units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces have been actively using balloons as aerial platforms, playing a crucial role in ensuring reliable communication and monitoring.

Balloons function as repeaters, allowing for much more stable communication compared to ground-based systems. This is crucial for the effective coordination of military actions.

“We have been working for two years to ensure the balloons can fly in any weather. We are now testing them in the most challenging situations,” one of the developers shared.

The balloon is capable of reaching an altitude of up to 800 meters, carrying a payload of up to 10 kg, and operating regardless of weather conditions. In addition to communication, it can perform surveillance, electronic warfare, and intercept enemy drones.

Last year, Militarnyi reported that Kvertus, the Ukrainian manufacturer of electronic warfare systems, introduced an airborne version of the Azimuth electronic intelligence system. It is mounted on a balloon by the company Aerobavovna.

Currently, balloons continue to be improved, and various applications are being found in the military field. Ukrainian developers are confident that these technologies will become an integral part of modern warfare.
