A steel from the Azovstal steel plant was used during the construction of the hull of the Ada-class Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette.
This was reported to Krivbass City journalists by the press service of the Metinvest industrial company.
In October, the future flagship of the Ukrainian Naval Forces was launched in Turkey.
Its hull is made of Metinvest Group’s steel, produced at the Mariupol Metallurgical Plant and Azovstal. The steel was smelted before the full-scale war.
“When the corvette was laid on the Turkish shipbuilding company RMK Marine Shipyard in September 2021, no one could assume that in half a year the metal of his hull would become exclusive,” the reports said.
Then Metinvest handed over 1,000 tons of hot rolled steel for the production of the corvette.
One part of the steel was brought directly from the Mariupol plant (MMKI). The other was brought from the Italian Metinvest Trametal, where the rental was made from the Azovstal slabs.
In February 2022, Mariupol mills stopped working.
“Months of enemy siege, daily bombardment and shelling followed. Azovstal has become a symbol of the indestructibility and stability of Ukrainians, and the pre-war steel of Mariupol mills has received a new life,” Metinvest says.
On October 2, 2022, corvette Hetman Ivan Mazepa solemnly took to the water in Istanbul.
“A lot of outstanding structures were erected from Azovstal steel, the latest shelter over the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, one of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe, protective locks for Venice. The lion’s part of the Ukrainian army is also our steel. And the modern corvette “Hetman Ivan Mazepa” is also made of Mariupol steel. It is truly incredible that the steel mills of Mariupol, even now, after the destruction, continue to work for the victory of Ukraine,” said Yurii Ryzhenkov, CEO of Metinvest Group.
Recall that the name Hetman Ivan Mazepa was chosen by the President of Ukraine back in 2021, when construction began.
