Greece is considering selling about 30 F-16 fighter jets to the United States, which could be transferred to Ukraine.
Al Jazeera reported on this.
The Hellenic Republic Ministry of National Defence plans to retire 32 F-16 Block 30 fighter jets.
These aircraft are being written off because their technical condition does not allow for a deep modernization to the level of the Block 70 Viper.
According to Al Jazeera, Greece is considering selling these fighter jets to the United States. The jets will be repaired, modernized, and transferred to Ukraine.
“Greece’s preferred formula for transferring those jets is to sell them back to the US, which would upgrade them and pass them on to Kyiv,” Al Jazeera notes.
This step is due to the fact that Greece is positioning itself as an ally of Ukraine and plans to use the money from the sale of F-16s to purchase new F-35s.
Previously, a U.S. Congressional committee has authorized the potential sale of up to 40 F-35 multirole fighter jets to Greece.
The potential sale of thirty F-16s to the United States will not affect the Hellenic Air Force’s defense capabilities.
Nevertheless, some government officials and the military do not support this idea and emphasize that Greece has a strong enemy against which the existing fleet is insufficient.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Greek government plans to decommission and sell F-16 and Mirage 2000 fighter jets as part of a large-scale reform.
The Greek government motivates the future reduction of the fleet of its fighter jets with high costs. This would include the decommissioning of the oldest aircraft, which will be sold if possible.
