Adopting Russian Experience: Belarus Shows Off Its Own ‘Tank Shed’

The Belarusian military is adopting Russia’s experience gained in the war against Ukraine. This time it concerns improvised protection of armored vehicles from drones.

This is evidenced by photos published by the country’s Ministry of Defense.

During an operational meeting of the command staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces, the military demonstrated their own ‘tank shed’ at the training ground.

During practical exercises, the military practiced, in particular, countering drones on the battlefield.

To this end, one T-72 tank was equipped with improvised cage armor on the turret, while the other had a metal structure that completely covered its side projection and the upper part of the hull and roof of the turret.

The structure was additionally covered with a camouflage net, so it is not known whether this improvised protection consists of lattice screens or metal sheets, similar to what the Russians do.

This superstructure is designed to protect the combat vehicle from attack drones and UAV munition drops.

The Russians began installing such ‘sheds’ on their tanks in Ukraine before the assault operations at the turn of 2023-2024. They usually look like a frame covered with metal sheets or other materials.

However, this improvised protection does not always help the occupiers to escape. Usually, more drones are needed to destroy such a ‘tank shed.’

Recently, the Russians showed off their assault tanks with massive anti-drone protection made of pieces of metal rope sticking out in different directions like needles from a hedgehog.

This type of defense is primarily intended to neutralize FPV drones, which are widely used at the front.

Unlike the classic cage armor and ‘sheds’ that often fail to withstand drone attacks, this protection leads to damage to the blades of the drones and the failure of the warhead to detonate.

However, this also significantly increases the weight of the combat vehicle, its dimensions, and compromises its ease of use.
