The 116th Mobile Brigade Combat Team the Virginia Army National Guard of USA has become the first unit to be re-equipped with drones and electronic warfare systems.
The reorganization was carried out as part of the Transformation in Contact 2.0 program during large-scale exercises at Fort Pickett, according to Army Recognition.
The brigade now has its own dedicated electronic warfare and satellite communications units that can be used on the front lines.
A new multifunctional reconnaissance company has been added to the unit. It brings together UAV operators, electronic warfare specialists, and cyber forces to work together in support of infantry battalions.
Throughout the year, Army National Guard members trained to operate the new systems and used them simultaneously for the first time at the training range. They searched for simulated enemy positions using electronic sensors and aerial reconnaissance.
An important part of the exercises was the integration of cyber operations into the work of infantry platoons. Specialists hacked into the enemy’s digital networks, forcing them to switch to unprotected communication channels that are easier to intercept.
In late 2026, the brigade will undergo a final evaluation at a training center in Louisiana. If the results are successful, this way of warfare will be implemented in all US Army infantry units.
