Russia intends to resume production of gas turbine engines used on the Т-80 series tanks.

The news was published by Russian propaganda media.

According to a report by Russian journalists who arrived at the JSC Kaluzhsky dvigatel plant (KADVI), the Russian military and political leadership decided to resume the production of tank gas turbine engines.

The plan is to set up the production of the GTD-1250 engine, produced at the facilities of this enterprise in the Soviet Union era. Their supply to the troops stopped in the 1990s, along with the termination of contracts for new tanks, due to which the enterprise was significantly reduced and degraded.

However, the increase in the order flow in 2017, together with the advent of Т-80BVM tanks, allowed the company to partially modernize and establish the production of the necessary components. Nevertheless, a lot of manual labor is involved in production, and the production of engines is in small series.

Currently, according to journalists, the company is already manufacturing all components of the tank gas turbine engine and is ready for the release of new units of products.

In addition to the fact that the new units will be restored from sump tanks and put into service more Soviet tanks, it also opens the way to the production of new combat vehicles.

As Militarnyi previously reported, the Russian Uralvagonzavod is working on the production of new Т-80 tanks.

Production is planned to be established on the basis of the JSC Omsk Transport Engineering Plant, which in Soviet times was a manufacturer of tanks of the Т-80 series.

Armata 2.0

In addition the Russians also stated their intention to develop a new 1500 horsepower gas turbine engine by 2025.

Currently, they have only one platform that needs such a powerful engine – a promising Т-14 Armata tank. The vehicle has long been known for its long-suffering X-shaped 2V-12-3А engine, which never met expectations and is still under development.

The emergence of an alternative engine of the same power can revive the project and give a new life to Armata with a gas turbine power plant.
