The US Department of Defense allocated $6 billion to Ukraine following an audit of two-year military aid to Ukraine.

Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh announced this during a briefing.

A Pentagon spokeswoman outlined that the results of the audit revealed that military aid to Ukraine was overestimated by $6.2 billion over two years.

Final calculations reveal that there was an error of $2.6 billion in the 2022 fiscal year and $3.6 billion in the current fiscal year.

According to the Pentagon’s statement, the error occurred because the valuation used the cost of new weapons, while Ukraine was given stocks held by the Pentagon, which should have been valued at a residual value less depreciation.

The additional money will be directed to finance additional tranches of weapons for Ukraine within the budget already approved by Congress, which, accordingly, will not require additional approval by government officials.

“This money just went back into the coffers,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said.

The Pentagon noted a possible error in military aid calculations back in May of this year. At that time, based on the results of an incomplete analysis, the difference was $3 billion.

American military aid to Ukraine

Since August 2021, the United States has provided 40 military assistance packages, under which, by the decision of the US Presidential Administration, weapons are withdrawn from the existing stocks of the Ministry of Defense and immediately transferred to Ukraine.

As part of these drawdowns, Ukraine is provided with ammunition for tube, rocket and missile artillery ordnance, SAMs, artillery systems, armored vehicles, motor vehicles, and other military equipment.

The USA is also funding the production of ammunition and weapons for Ukraine, which should arrive in the medium term, and compensating for the weapons transferred by other countries.

In general, according to United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, as of May 25, the United States and its allies provided Ukraine with military aid in the amount of $65 billion.
