President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi has called for the creation of the European Armed Forces.
He made this statement on the second day of the Munich Security Conference, Suspilne reports.
According to the Ukrainian head of state, this is dictated by the current situation, in which the United States may abandon its participation in NATO.
“Let’s be honest, now we cannot rule out the possibility that America may say ‘No’ to Europe in matters that threaten it,” Zelenskyi noted.
In his speech, he voiced a thesis that has already been heard in Europe.
“Many leaders have said that Europe needs its own army, a European army. I believe that the time has come. We need to create the Armed Forces of Europe. It is no harder than standing up to Russia’s attacks, as we have already done.”
Yesterday, he cited the number of military units in Europe, where Ukraine has 110 brigades, and Russia has 220. But in all other countries of Europe, there are only 82 brigades. He also pointed out that Ukraine needed 1.5 million troops to stand up to Russia on its own.
“There are 82 real brigades in Europe, I spoke with senators today, and we have 110. Even together, we cannot be compared to the Russian army. So, if we are talking about security guarantees, we must find money for a bigger army for Ukraine, and we must also find a way to increase production (of weapons – ed.) and increase the army in Europe,” the president said.
Volodymyr Zelenskyi proposes the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which have experience in modern warfare, as the basis for a united European army.
“Three years of full-scale war have proven that we already have the basis for a united European military force. And now, when we are fighting this war and laying the foundation for peace and security, we must build the Armed Forces of Europe,” the president stated.
In addition, he cited several other steps that will protect Europe from Russian aggression. In total, there are five positions:
“First, the European Armed Forces as a renewal of NATO. Second, a common European foreign policy. Third, the level of European cooperation that Washington should take seriously. Fourth, international law. And the fifth is the continuation of any pressure on Russia, because it is this pressure that guarantees peace, not Putin’s words, not just some papers,” Zelenskyi stated.
