Dmitry Donskoy designated Project 941 Akula class nuclear ballistic missile submarine was decommissioned in Russia.
Russian media reported about this.
After decommissioning, the submarine will be scrapped.
At the beginning of 2021, the plans to decommission the submarine with world’s largest displacement were made public.
The TK-208 Dmitriy Donskoy submarine was the last of the six active submarines built under Project 941 Akula class, the remaining three were scrapped. The two remaining subs, TK-17 Arkhangelsk and TK-20 Severstal, have been in reserve since the mid-2000s.
Until recently, Dmitriy Donskoy was used to test the Bulava missile system developed by the Russian defense-industrial complex. From1990 to 2002 the submarine underwent Project 941UM modernization.
Dmitriy Donskoy was laid down on June 17, 1976, and launched on September 23, 1980. It was transferred to the USSR Navy on December 12, 1981.
Project 941 nuclear submarine missile carriers were intended for missile strikes on military and other strategic enemy targets.
For this purpose, 20 mine launchers of the D-19 missile systems with R-39 submarine-launched ballistic missiles were placed on board the submarine.
The mass of each such missile is 90 tons, the length is 17.1 m, the maximum firing range is 8,300 km. The combat part of the missile consists of 10 separate warheads with individual guidance.
Submarines have six bow torpedo tubes (4×650 mm and 2×533 mm), and an option to install a mine barrier. Among the radio equipment on board there are hydroacoustic stations, sonar devices, and radio electronic reconnaissance systems.
A total of six Project 941 vessels were built.
