The Ukrainian Legion in Poland did not receive enough volunteers to form it.

The local publication Wiadomosci reported on this, citing the country’s defense minister.

“The creation of the Ukrainian Legion in Poland is a big question mark. We are not responsible for recruitment, but the number of people who would have to volunteer on the Ukrainian side is too small,” Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz shared.

At the same time, he said that Poland is ready to train Ukrainian soldiers and has trained about 20,000 since the beginning of the war.

“We are not responsible for the recruitment. However, the number of people supposed to volunteer on the Ukrainian side is too small. Initially, the claims were very high that even one brigade could be formed, that is, several thousand people. However, this did not happen,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.

Militarnyi reported on plans to create the Ukrainian Legion in Poland in early July.

The formation of the unit is provided for in the security agreement signed in Warsaw on July 8, 2024. The security agreement also provides for the training of this unit in Poland.

The agreement states that people living in other countries, not only in Poland, will also be able to participate in the training process.

The participants will agree on the procedure for selecting, training, manning, and supplying weapons, equipment, and ammunition, as well as on the social and financial support of such military personnel and the status of their stay in Poland.

According to the Eurostat database, about 4.3 million Ukrainians live in EU countries as of January 2024. About 860,000 of them are adult men.

At the beginning of September, it was reported that the official recruitment to the Ukrainian Legion in Poland, where Ukrainians are supposed to undergo training abroad, had not yet begun.

Poland was ready to start training recruits on August 1, but the recruitment never took place. The websites of the Ukrainian embassy and consulates do not contain information about recruitment to the Ukrainian Legion.
