Officials in Donald Trump’s administration believe that the political situation for the US could be more favorable if Israel strikes Iran first.
This is reported by American media, in particular POLITICO, citing sources familiar with internal discussions in the White House.
According to the sources, senior presidential advisers allegedly prefer a scenario in which an Israeli operation would precede possible US action.
Trump’s team believes that an Israeli strike could provoke Iran to respond, which would create additional grounds for American intervention.
This calculation is explained by the peculiarities of public opinion in the US regarding a potential war with Iran.
Recent opinion polls indicate limited willingness among the American public to support a large-scale military campaign without a direct cause.
At the same time, sources note that the most likely scenario for further developments remains a joint operation by the US and Israel.
In response to questions from journalists, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly emphasized that the media can speculate, but the final decisions are made exclusively by the president.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington declined to comment publicly on these reports.
The day before, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held meetings in Washington, where they discussed Iran’s nuclear program and Tehran’s missile capabilities.
At the same time, the American negotiating team continues diplomatic contacts with the Iranian side.
The US administration is also assessing potential military risks, including possible Iranian strikes on American facilities in the region.
Previously, the US redeployed F-22A fighter jets to Israel amid tensions with Iran.
