The United States is seeking to resolve bureaucratic obstacles to the use of $6 billion in military aid for Ukraine.
The Army Times reported on this.
According to U.S. officials, the Pentagon has until October to extend the Pentagon’s authorization to send weapons from its stockpile to Ukraine.
The Biden administration has asked Congress to include the funding authority in any continuing resolution lawmakers may manage to pass before the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
This will ensure that the federal government is funded for one year and prevent a shutdown.
In addition, the government noted that the U.S. Department of Defense was additionally considering other options to continue to assist Ukraine if those efforts were unsuccessful.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the funding talks, did not provide details on the options. But they said about $5.8 billion in presidential drawdown authority, or PDA, would expire.
Another $100 million in PDA does not expire at the end of the month, according to the officials.
The PDA (Presidential Drawdown Authority) allows the Pentagon to transfer weapons to Ukraine from its own stockpiles as soon as possible.
In addition, the Security Assistance Initiative for Ukraine has just over $4 billion, which expires on September 30, 2025.
But these funds can be spent to pay for arms contracts that will not be delivered for a year or more.
Militarnyi previously reported that the United States was working on a substantial aid package for Ukraine, which was expected to be announced by the end of September.
