The United States is prepared to sell Ukraine more than just Patriot air defense systems as part of President Donald Trump’s new plan to supply weapons through European intermediaries, CNN reported, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the U.S. may also sell short-range missiles, likely GMLRS. artillery shells, and AIM-120 medium-range air-to-air missiles to NATO allies, who would then transfer them to Ukraine.

Officials said the decision is driven by multiple factors. By selling weapons to European countries rather than transferring them directly to Kyiv, Trump aims to avoid criticism for breaking his campaign promise to reduce U.S. involvement in the conflict.

He is also expected to highlight the financial benefits. With a single Patriot system costing roughly $1 billion, Trump has already pointed to the scheme as an economic win for the U.S.

Officials added that delivering Patriots already stationed in Europe would be faster than shipping them from the United States or building new systems domestically.

Some U.S. officials see the weapons deliveries as a signal to Moscow that Trump is serious about ending the war.

“He is seriously unhappy with Putin. He wants to show that he is serious about ending the war. And maybe this will show Putin that it is time to start negotiations,” one official told CNN.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said several countries have already committed to the initiative.

“I have been in contact with many countries. I can say that at the moment it is, first of all, Germany, but also Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. There is also Great Britain, the Netherlands, Canada. They all want to join this initiative. And this is only the first wave,” Rutte said during a meeting with Trump.

In April 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to buy 10 Patriot systems to protect major cities from Russian missile strikes.

“One system costs one and a half billion dollars. We are ready to buy at least ten systems to close some cities — only civilian ones, city centers, where there are crowds of people. This is 15 billion. We are ready to pay this 15 billion. We will find this money and we will pay everything,” Zelenskyy said at the time.
