General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has presented the name of its new unmanned fighter jet for the U.S. Air Force – YFQ-42A Dark Merlin.
The aircraft is currently undergoing flight testing as part of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, according to Air & Space Forces.
The company said the name “Dark Merlin” is inspired by the merlin – a small but fierce falcon known for its speed and aggressive hunting style.
The manufacturer links the platform’s concept to speed, maneuverability, and surprise attack tactics.
David R. Alexander, President of GA-ASI, reported that the chosen name reflects the aircraft’s combat philosophy.
The designation follows the U.S. Air Force naming system.
The prefix “Y” indicates a pre-production test aircraft, “F” stands for fighter, and “Q” denotes an unmanned system.
If full-scale production begins, the aircraft will be designated FQ-42A while retaining the name Dark Merlin.
The platform is part of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, which envisions unmanned systems operating alongside crewed fighter jets.
According to the company, Dark Merlin has already completed its first flights and demonstrated autonomous flight modes.
The U.S. Air Force views the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program as one of the key directions in the development of combat aviation.
Lockheed Martin recently announced that it is developing a new combat unmanned aerial vehicle, Vectis, including for the U.S. Air Force.
