The United States is moving JASSM-ER cruise missiles from stockpiles in multiple regions to the Middle East.
Bloomberg reported this, citing informed sources.
The order to transfer missiles from storage sites in the Pacific came in late March. The US also plans to move weapons from other locations, including the continental United States, to bases under US Central Command and to Fairford in the UK.
After these transfers, the US will retain about 425 JASSM-ER missiles for other regions, down from a pre-war stockpile of 2,300.
This stock is enough for about 17 B-1B bombers to carry out a single combat mission. Another 75 missiles are unusable due to technical issues or damage.
Along with the shorter-range JASSM, about two-thirds of the US inventory of this weapon type has already been used in the war with Iran.
The need to replenish interceptor missiles and long-range strike weapons emerged immediately after the US-Israeli air campaign began on February 28. At current production rates, rebuilding stockpiles could take years.
One source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US used more than 1,000 JASSM-ER missiles in the first four weeks of the war. The US Air Force also used another 47 missiles in an operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Since 2009, the US has funded the procurement of more than 6,200 missiles from the JASSM family. Production of the baseline version ended about a decade ago.
Lockheed Martin plans to produce 396 extended-range missiles in 2026. Output could rise to 860 units if production lines, which also manufacture LRASM anti-ship missiles, are fully reallocated.
JASSM (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile) is a US air-launched cruise missile developed by Lockheed Martin to strike high-value targets from outside enemy air defenses.
It uses stealth features to reduce radar detection and carries a 450 kg penetrating warhead designed to destroy hardened targets.
The baseline JASSM has a range of about 370 km and uses inertial navigation with GPS updates and an infrared seeker in the terminal phase. It can autonomously recognize targets, improving accuracy under electronic warfare conditions.
The JASSM-ER (Extended Range) version is a deeply upgraded variant with a range exceeding 900 km.
Both versions are integrated on multiple platforms, including B-1B, B-2 and B-52 bombers, as well as F-15, F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.
