US experts to conduct online course for Ukrainian military surgeons

Experts from the United States will conduct an online course for Ukrainian military and civilian surgeons.

The Global Medical Knowledge Alliance (GMKA) also said that the course will cover anesthesiologists, intensivists, traumatologists and military doctors.

The Global Medical Knowledge Alliance, GMKA, is a non-profit organization that creates, disseminates, and promotes evidence-based medical knowledge, implements educational and social projects, and conducts research to help improve the quality of healthcare and make it more accessible in Ukraine.

The course “Management of Severe Trauma” was developed at the request of Ukrainian medics working with military and civilian trauma related to combat operations.

Course details:

  • Course start date: May 15.
  • Duration: 2.5 months (11 online lectures).
  • Language: English.
  • Cost: free of charge.
  • Format: online (Zoom).

The organization added that those who wish to participate must register.

“This course on polytrauma is for those who are already practicing and dealing with severe patients on a daily basis. We have invited American colleagues with years of experience to share their applied knowledge that will help Ukrainian doctors improve the management of severe trauma at the front lines and in the rear. Courses such as this one strengthen the medical system from within and help save as many lives as possible in times of war,” says Nelya Melnychuk, founder of the GMKA.

The course will provide detailed and highly specialized training in polytrauma for professionals with clinical experience.

Over the course of 2.5 months, the course participants will deepen their knowledge, in particular, on the following topics

  • Intensive care for traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.
  • Features of anesthesia in liver injury surgery with temporary vascular occlusion.
  • Complex management of facial injuries.
  • Central airway injuries: tracheal and bronchial trauma.

The course speakers are specialists of various specializations who work in leading US clinics and have many years of experience in the treatment of polytrauma and associated critical conditions.

List of speakers:

  • Jonathan D. Gates, MD, MBA, FACS – Professor of Surgery at the University of Connecticut and Chief of Trauma at Hartford Hospital, was Director of the Trauma Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for 24 years.
  • Mark A. de Moya, MD, FACS, is a professor of surgery and chief of trauma and emergency surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, focusing on the treatment of complex thoracic trauma, including penetrating and blunt cardiac injuries.
  • Kat Albutt, MD, MPH, is an assistant professor of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, focusing on the management of patients with critical surgical conditions, particularly after emergency interventions.
  • Kavitha L. Ranganathan, MD, is the Director of Craniofacial Reconstruction, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Assistant Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including craniofacial reconstruction for cancer, trauma, burns, and congenital anomalies in adults.

In March, it became known that the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine will establish 4 interregional rehabilitation centers for military personnel.
