The United States is considering sending its troops to Ukraine if Russia abandons peace talks.

US Vice President JD Vance stated this in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

The official also said that Washington could impose economic sanctions against Moscow.

At the same time, the possibility of sending American troops to Ukraine, which the United States has consistently rejected, “remains on the table.”

According to Vance, this could come true if Russia fails to “negotiate in good faith.”

The vice president suggested that the negotiations could result in “a deal that would shock a lot of people.”

This position differs from the recent statement by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that the United States will not send its troops into Ukraine.

The Pentagon chief also said that returning Ukraine’s borders to the state of 2014 was an unrealistic goal, and noted that Ukraine’s membership in NATO was not seen by the United States as a realistic outcome of a peaceful settlement of the war with Russia.

JD Vance emphasized in his interview that it was too early to say what part of the country’s territory would remain under Russian occupation or what security guarantees the United States and other Western allies would offer Ukraine.

“There are any number of formulations, configurations, but we really care about Ukraine’s sovereign independence,” the US Vice President emphasized.

He said that the Trump administration would try to convince Putin that Russia would achieve more at the negotiating table than on the battlefield.

The US Vice President noted that Trump could change his mind depending on how the talks would unfold.
