The US government has approved a proposed US$108 million sale of technical support and equipment for tanks and combat vehicles to Taiwan, the fourth arms sale to the nation that Washington has authorized this year. The weapons will improve the Army of the Republic of China’s ability to withstand threats and increase the level of interaction with partners.
This was reported by TaipeiTimes.
This $108 million deal would include unclassified spare and repair parts, assembly for tanks and combat vehicles, logistical and technical assistance, and technical and logistical support by the US government and contractors.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified the U.S. Congress of the possible sale after it was approved by the U.S. Department of State.
The Agency stated that such an agreement would increase the ability of the Armed Forces of Taiwan to “meet current and future threats.”
The publication emphasizes that such cooperation will also increase the interoperability of the country with the United States and other partners.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense claimed that the contract would assist the military in maintaining sufficient equipment and spare parts for its military vehicles and support its training for combat readiness at a time when Taiwan is facing “increased military threats” from China.
Xavier Chang, Spokesman for the Administration of the President of the Republic of China, stressed that Taiwan is committed to working with partners around the world to promote peace and stability in the India-Pacific region and worldwide.
In mid-June, Chinese leader Xi Jinping signed a directive that allows the “non-military” use of the Chinese army.
