U.S. President Joe Biden has told Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, that the United States will provide a small number of long-range missiles to aid Ukraine to defend itself in war with Russia.
NBC News reported on this with reference to three U.S. officials and a ‘congressional official’ familiar with the discussions.
The officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly, did not say when the missiles would be delivered or when a public announcement would be made.
The sources of NBC News did not specify either the type of missile; the US arsenal has a large number of missiles capable of hitting targets at a long distance.
The congressional official said there was still a debate about the type of missile that would be sent and how many would be delivered to Ukraine.
They added that countries in Eastern Europe had already given Ukraine large portions of their weapons stockpiles.
It could be a wide range of missile weapons, such as the previously promised GLSDB missiles.
As previously reported, these missiles could be delivered to Ukraine no earlier than the fall of 2023.
The possibility of transferring ATACMS long-range missiles to Ukraine is being discussed, but there is no consensus in the United States.
Militarnyi reported previously that the United States supported a bipartisan resolution calling on the Biden Administration to provide Ukraine with ATACMS missiles.
The resolution H.Res. 488 was considered and supported by the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The document emphasizes the need to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles immediately while maintaining the combat readiness of the United States.
