The UK government has announced that it will simplify the procedure for calling up reservists amid growing security threats.
The changes will allow tens of thousands of former military personnel to be called up for service for much longer than before, with the age limit for mobilization raised from 55 to 65, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
Former military personnel will also be eligible for conscription for 18 years after leaving service.
Currently, the British Army and Royal Air Force call up reservists only up to the age of 55, and the Royal Navy for six years after discharge.
The new rules also lower the threshold for mobilizing reserves.
Reservists will be allowed to be called up not only in the event of an attack or emergency, but also during the ‘military training’ phase.
Armed Forces Minister Al Carns said that victory in war depends on reserves and the rapid mobilization of society.
According to him, a ‘whole of society’ approach is needed, including the economy and industry.
At the same time, the military recognizes the risks to recruitment if people fear being called up again many years after serving.
The changes, agreed with veterans’ organizations, are expected to take effect in the spring of 2027.
At the same time, Chief of the Defence Staff Richard Knight warned that budget deficits could limit the implementation of all planned reforms.
Britain also recently announced that in 2026 it will introduce annual contracts for young people with a payment of £26,000.
