The British government is considering providing Western-made tanks to Ukraine.
The British newspaper Financial Times reported this with reference to sources in the government.
It was confirmed to the journalists that the British government is planning to provide tanks to Ukraine to help the country defend against the Russian invasion.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reportedly asked Defense Secretary Ben Wallace to speed up assistance to Ukraine, including the provision of tanks.
The government of Great Britain aims to achieve victory of Ukraine in the war.
“We are accelerating our support to Ukraine with the type of next-generation military technology that will help win this war,” a British official told the publication.
Previously, it was announced that the United Kingdom might transfer about ten Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine.
The Challenger 2 is a third-generation British main battle tank. It is equipped with a 120-mm (4.7 in) 55-caliber long L30A1 tank gun, the successor to the L11 gun.
The United Kingdom might transfer approximately ten Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine. This amount is enough to equip a squadron.
The transfer of new weaponry to Ukraine, including tanks, might be announced after the Ramstein format conference on January 20.
It could be a joint decision of all the allies in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
As previously reported, Ukraine will be provided with a company of Leopard tanks within the international coalition of allies.
