The Ukrainian military showcased the process of programming and loading of the M982 Excalibur precision artillery shells.
The video with the work of Ukrainian gunners was published by journalist Andriy Tsaplienko.
The military uses American shells for 155mm M777A2 towed howitzers.
When firing with this projectile, the howitzer barrel is pointed almost vertically upwards to bring the projectile to the maximum possible altitude, from which it will then fly to the target.
The video also showcases how the shells are programmed due to an improved EPIAFS device.
An EPIAFS is a lightweight, portable device for installing an inductive (electronic) fuze.
The American 155mm М982 Excalibur guided rocket-assisted projectile is being developed by Raytheon Missile Systems and BAE Systems Bofors.
This projectile has an effective firing range of 40 km and a circular error probability of several meters thanks to the guidance system from inertial and satellite navigation.
In particular, the proven range of the Excalibur projectile with a M777 howitzer with a barrel length of 39 calibers is 36 kilometers. However, CAESAR ACS with a 52-caliber barrel is capable of firing at a distance of 46 km and PzH 2000 ACS at 48 km.
The provision of M982 Excalibur rounds to Ukraine became known in July this year.
Then it was reported that the United States would provide Ukraine with 1000 pieces of precision ammunition for 155mm artillery as part of a new $400 million military aid package.
In April 2022, Canadian media suggested that the government could provide Ukrainians with a certain number of these shells left after the Afghan campaign.
