Ukrainian defenders are already undergoing training in the UK, learning how to use the armored vehicles that would be delivered to Ukraine. A total of 120 vehicles will be arriving in Ukraine.
Militarnyi informs about this.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson has announced that such training is already being conducted, The Guardian reports.
British Forces are also training Ukrainian counterparts in Poland on how to use the anti-aircraft missiles.
“I can say that we are currently training Ukrainians in Poland in the use of anti-aircraft defense, and actually in the UK in the use of armored vehicles,” Boris Johnson said.
Britain has agreed to send at least 120 armored vehicles, 80 of which are the Mastiff, Husky and Wolfhound protected mobility vehicles.
The Mastiff (6×6) protected patrol vehicle is a kind of MRAP Cougar HE that is adapted to the British Army requirements. It is designed to transport infantry, as well as protect against small arms, land mines, and homemade explosive devices.
The vehicle has the capacity to transport eight servicemen and two crew members. Mastiff has a maximum speed of 90kph and is armed with the latest weapon systems, including a 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun, 12.7mm heavy machine gun, or 40mm automatic grenade launcher.
Husky is a special vehicle for detecting explosives and demining activities. The vehicle is designed in a way that during a blast event, the outside components would be destroyed, and the cabin would remain intact.
Wolfhound is a heavy-armored truck. It is used to accompany the front-line patrols, transport ammunition, and carry essential combat supplies. Wolfhound is armed with a 7.62 caliber machine gun.
The other 40 vehicles are used for combat reconnaissance, including the Spartan, which can transport up to four soldiers plus a crew of three, Samaritan ambulances, Sultan armored command vehicles, and Samson armored recovery vehicles.
Spartan is a tracked armored personnel carrier of the British Army. The vehicle can carry up to seven servicemen, including three crew members. It is armed with a single machine gun.
Samaritan is an armored ambulance designed to transport six wounded persons.
Sultan is a British Army command and control vehicle. The vehicle can accommodate 5 to 6 crew members including a commander, driver, radio operator, and shift workers. The back part is intended to be expanded by the means of the attached tent. It is armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun.
The Samson repair and recovery vehicle is designed to restore the wheeled and tracked vehicles.
Training to use them would take a few weeks, according to the publication, largely so that the Ukrainians could familiarize themselves with the available control systems.
It is also reported that the British forces in Poland are training the Ukrainian military to use the Starstreak air defense missile system along with the Stormer vehicles.
Previously, U.S. President Joe Biden announced an additional $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine. From the U.S., Ukraine will be receiving the 72 additional 155mm howitzers and 144,000 artillery rounds; 72 tactical vehicles to tow howitzers; and 121 Phoenix Ghost tactical unmanned aerial systems.
